Sam Fitton's Gradely Holiday Week


Summer holidays - the one week of release from the mill, the one week of freedom, the one week when you could walk abroad like a human being, instead of scurrying about like an ant attending to the infernal instruments of industrialisation.  How much people must have looked forward to them, and alas, how often they must have been disappointed.  Here Sam Fitton in his book 'Gradely Lancashire,' published in 1929 hints at some of the frustrations.  Afterwards there's an appreciation of the book and of Sam Fitton's life and work by fellow writer Ammon Wrigley.
