Up until the 18th century the roads in and around Blackburn were in a sorry state of repair.  From the 1750’s the Turnpike Trust began to have an effect in the area. A list of the acts passed to open Turnpike roads from Blackburn to various other towns is given.
The development of the railway and how the rail network grew in the area is touched on.
