Streets Ahead with Paint

Streets Ahead with paint(1968).  11 minutes 50 seconds.

This short film, made by Darwen's Walpamur (now Crown Paints) film unit, was made to showcase the design skills and variety of paints provided by the Company.  In this film, Blackburn's Civic Trust was inspired by the new town-centre developments to suggest a renovation of shops and businesses between Strawberry Bank and Sudell Cross. Walpamur employees appear alongside various Blackburn worthies discussing options for change. The film shows scenes of Preston New Road before and after the facelift.   The shops and businesses seen in the film are mostly gone, and the Strawberry Bank end disappeared to enable the construction of Barbara Castle Way.   DW 2018.

The Story of Paint

The Story of Paint (1967).  4 minutes 50 seconds.

This short promotional film, made by Darwen's Walpamur (now Crown Paints) film unit, was made to show the wide variety of the uses of paint.  There are opening scenes of Blackpool sea-front, before the cameras switch to Blackburn town centre.   We see the newly-built market, as well as older shops and stores now long since disappeared.   There is a dramatic scene of three fire engines racing out of the old Canterbury Street fire station, followed by shots of Ribble Bus Company's Leyland Atlantean buses in their fiery red livery; and older Blackburn Corporation front-engined buses, in their original green and cream livery.  DW 2018.
